It is worth saying that it has recently become more difficult to obtain sponsorship for social workers wishing to live and work in Australia. Consequently we are currently only really able to assist those who can either pass the Australian General Skilled Migration points test or are eligible to apply for a working holiday visa.
Points test – General Skilled Migration. Qualifications and experience are important under the Australian immigration points system and social workers can score a maximum 60 points. However, to achieve the maximum points and to work as a social worker in Australia you will need to be eligible to join the AASW.
This generally means you will need to have a 4-year degree with a social work qualification included within it. To check your qualifications please look on the links page. If you do not have a 4-year degree, you may still qualify for membership of the AIWCW if you have a degree and a social work qualification – again, check the links page for more details. A DipSW on its own is not likely to be recognised as a social work qualification in Australia without you undertaking further study.
Working Holiday Visa. Just what it says it is – a visa that allows you to work while you’re on holiday. To be eligible, you will need to be under 30 years old. It is valid for a year (more if you spend time working on a farm!) and you will be allowed to work for no more than 3 months in each job before moving on. We can assist you to find a job in the social welfare field whether or not your qualifications are recognised in Australia, but you will need a full driving licence.
